Ridicule Him Into Oblivion

Cenk Unger today at The Huffington Post says what I was saying to anyone who would listen during the ’04 election. The answer to countering Bush’s authority is not convincing half the country that he’s evil and not a good leader, but rather ridiculing him to the point that he becomes the butt of the joke. No one willingly gives power to the butt of the joke. As Cenk points out, it’s not as if we don’t already know in our guts that he’s an imbecile, it’s just that not enough people have found a way to deal with just how scary that truth is.

In every other job he’s had, Bush has been a complete failure and in any other job right now, he’d be the same. I wouldn’t hire a loser like Bush to wash my car, unless it was for charity. No one would trust him to do anything important, yet we continue to allow him to be President. It really makes no sense, unless as a country, we are less inclined than Bush to admit we’ve made a mistake.

There’s no getting around it, Bush is the cheesy letch that fondles you on the dance-floor even though you just met. He’s the drunk in the local watering hole that has an opinion of everything but knows nothing. He is the frat boy that skips classes and tries to convince you to do the same, because he’s got a job at his daddy’s company waiting for him, no matter how ill-equipped he is for any position, even in the mailroom. Anyone who thought they wanted to have a beer with Bush clearly is a glutton for punishment.

A few of the whoppers caught on tape this week, Bush talking to world leaders with his mouth full, learning for the first time that Russia is big and so is China, and giving the Chancellor of Germany an unsolicited back rub during a G8 meeting are not embarrassing to Bush, he’d have to understand that his behavior falls outside the lines of acceptable behavior to be embarrassed, but are rather humiliating to Americans who must accept that he is the face of our nation.

I was outraged when Bush insulted the people of India by not visiting the Taj Mahal while he was there in March, but watching his childish behavior during the G8 Summit, I’ve passed outrage and now I just want to crawl in a hole and wait for this nightmare to be over. I certainly don’t want to visit any foreign country for a while because, really, what does it say about us that we’ve elected this sack of rocks not once, but twice?! The only upside is that most of the rest of the world understands that our last several elections were fraudulent, we’re the only ones still hanging on to the false hope that we have free and fair elections in America.

The media were all over President Ford and ran his falls, trips and gaffs all the time on the evening news, and although this president has been given a pass for the past six years, the fact that we’re seeing some of his bad behavior getting wider coverage may be a sign that traditional media may almost be ready to join The Daily Show, The Colbert Report and the blogisphere in ridiculing this President. Neutering him by making him the butt of the joke might work. It would have worked better as a political strategy during the ’04 election, but it may still do some good now, or at least it will shut down his last remaining supporters. It’s one thing to defend the asshole bully that swaggers around acting tough on your behalf, but it’s quite another to buddy up to the loser that repels women, runs one business after another into the ground (taking your investment money with him), proves himself a rube and an idiot when in the company of his colleagues, yet still swaggers around with his chest puffed up like a little boy pretending to be a cowboy. It would be mildly irritating if he was a child, but it’s downright unacceptable as the leader of the free world. Ridicule him into oblivion, it’s as good a strategy as any other at this point.

The problem with ridicule and satire in American politics is that American history has been elevated to Divine Destiny and the White House is akin to St Peter's in Rome. Ridicule the Prez or America's foreign policy and one is accused of blasphemy.

I read that Florida has just outlawed "interpretive" history in schools. History is now declared to be "factual, knowable, and testable". It is not "constructed". So, while Darwin's evolution is pushed to the margins as "just one theory among many", history is elevated to hardcore dogma.

Bush could just quit his other "jobs", or have his daddy bail him out, but bein' preznit is a federal job. And you know how hard it is to get rid of an incompetent federal employee...
While waiting for my mom's hairdo day to wind up, I made myself look at a puff piece People magazine had on W.'s 60th birthday, a piece of shite article illustrated with him in his slinky, stinky bike shorts. I tried to imagine how anyone could admire this fuckwit, and what that person would be like. Not a heartening sight.
For quite some time I have been avoiding any glimpse of him or sounds of him, but I am making myself look at him as if at the scene of a hideous disaster. It is, of course, one of worldwide proportions, from which we will suffer for decades, if not permanently.

The only thing I ever wanted to do with my life was travel - didn't want a career, kids, a house...none of it.
And now....
Even when we were in Rome in 2003, a local heard my 'accent' and yelled "Yankee Go Home!".....I wouldn't want to even think of the response I would get now....

When I am driving and the radio plays a blurb of him speaking I have to turn it off. Even just his voice is not permitted in my car.....

"In every other job he’s had, Bush has been a complete failure and in any other job right now, he’d be the same."

I feel your pain and share your dissatisfaction.

However, for the record, Bush was by most accounts a popular and successful governor of Texas. That fact leaves me drawing some pretty negative conclusions about Texas, but it's the reality.

I look on this situation as further affirmation of the Peter Principle, which states people rise to their level of incompetence, making it one promotion beyond the last job they could actually do well.

Since we seem to be in a silly season for putting forth constitutional amendments that won't succeed, I'd like to see a vote on an amendment banning members of the Bush clan from running for president. We have no business testing the "things happen in threes" theory with something as important as the presidency.

S.W.A.~ I'm no fan of Tex-ass, but be comforted somewhat by the fact that the governorship there is mostly just a figurehead position, with no real power. AWOL's main responsiblity there was to sign death warrants for executions, which he performed w/ an unprecedented and uncharacteristic zeal... whether he actually performed the job successfully depends on what your definition of "is" is...

geocracker, you're exactly right about the Texas governorship being an especially undemanding one. That underscores my larger point that Bush never had the horsepower and savvy to be a good president.

Unfortunately, this kind of distinction doesn't register in the consciousness of most people. To them, a governor's a governor — Illinois, New York, Texas, what's the difference? Their understanding is that someone who functioned OK as a governor ought to be able to handle the presidency.

Fortunately for us all, that assumption usually works out all right. Bush is spectacular proof people should be much more discerning.

Ridicule is ok and I always appreciate any suggestions on how to bring down this regime. But we're going to need a lot more than ridicule to counter the rovian fear and smear machine, the corporate media power, the rethug's financial resources, et al. We also need to inspire and motivate our Democratic voters who are somewhat beaten down and broke(n).

Max Edison-- I apologize. I usually like to add the word "fake" before "cowboy" anytime I refer to Bush or anyone that likes to play at being a cowboy. I have great respect for (and like many American women, a real attraction to) cowboys who drive the animals and work the land, respecting both and as you pointed out, women for sure. I will be more careful in the future because you're absolutely right, cowboys don't swagger, at least not the ones I've met. Little boys pretending to be cowboys swagger, that would have been a much better analogy. In fact, it’s so much better that I think I’ll change it now. Thanks for the input.

Reality? I think not!
