Happy Mother's Day!

Mother's Day Proclamation - 1870
by Julia Ward Howe

Arise then...women of this day!
Arise, all women who have hearts!
Whether your baptism be of water or of tears!
Say firmly:
"We will not have questions answered by irrelevant agencies,
Our husbands will not come to us, reeking with carnage,
For caresses and applause.
Our sons shall not be taken from us to unlearn
All that we have been able to teach them of charity, mercy and patience.
We, the women of one country,
Will be too tender of those of another country
To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs."

From the voice of a devastated Earth a voice goes up with
Our own. It says: "Disarm! Disarm!
The sword of murder is not the balance of justice."
Blood does not wipe our dishonor,
Nor violence indicate possession.
As men have often forsaken the plough and the anvil
At the summons of war,
Let women now leave all that may be left of home
For a great and earnest day of counsel.
Let them meet first, as women, to bewail and commemorate the dead.
Let them solemnly take counsel with each other as to the means
Whereby the great human family can live in peace...
Each bearing after his own time the sacred impress, not of Caesar,
But of God -
In the name of womanhood and humanity, I earnestly ask
That a general congress of women without limit of nationality,
May be appointed and held at someplace deemed most convenient
And the earliest period consistent with its objects,
To promote the alliance of the different nationalities,
The amicable settlement of international questions,
The great and general interests of peace.

And a Happy Mother's Day to you, too, LGND. Would that ALL the mothers in the world, and the fathers, espoused the values put forth in that proclamation. Unfortunately there are far too many dense people, male and female, who want bloody military business to continue, no matter how unnecessary.

Hi Mollie ... it's probably no longer Mother's Day as I type this but Happy, Happy to you anyway.

I have great admiration for all my single Mom online acquaintances who work hard to raise their children in a loving, caring environment. Don't know if you fall into that category but this was a weekend to respect and honor women in general.

I sent my friend a dozen Dahlias in assorted colors Thursday to let her know I care. The gift of flowers may be old fashioned in the 21st century but it's the thought that still counts.

You've been writing some great columns lately, btw. I'll try to comment more often when I can but as a fellow writer you know research is the foundation for creative thought and is time consuming.

Peace,
Cosmic

Too bad we still aren't a Matriarchy worshipping the Great Goddess.

I think the important thing to remember when celebrating mothers is that life is cyclical. This life is NOT it. And we cannot squander what we have to live it up NOW.

Each of us had a mother who lived solely for us for a time. We must repay that debt in a twofold manner. First, we can care for her in her second childhood. And second, we can bring forth another child to be the future. Life is a circle, not a straight line.

And we must look to Motherhood and the Family to find our next economic model. (Economics means housekeeping.) Why? Because Capitalism is a false model. It's like the drunken husband & father who drinks the weekly paycheck, sending the family into poverty. Read Can Capitalism Be Green?
